Album Review: "Operation Take Back Hip Hop"- Craig G and Marley Marl

Photobucket

This is the second Marley Marl album in as many years that would have been good in the 80's, this time with freestyle legend Craig G on the mic. The album with KRS-One was pretty much garbage but its also been obvious for some time now that KRS has lost his marbles. In any event, Craig G and Marley are far too irrelevent to ever "take back hip hop," but will this at least appease the purist types on the internet?

1. Intro

I thought Craig G and Marley Marl were going to take back hip hop with some old school flava but apparently they've built a robot to do it for them.

2. Reintroduction

Wow this is just bad all around. The beat hurts my ears, the lyrics suck, and the hook is laughable.

3. Quality Work (Feat. Will Pack & Rakaa)

I swear this is exactly like the last song, all the way down to the shittyness. An extremely annoying beat (this one full of goofy, space-sound-effect noises) and rhymes about how rap sucks now (Craig actually says "monkey see, monkey do" on both).

4. Made The Change

This one uses the Biggie voice sample. Couldn't have seen that coming. This one has a fruity flute sample on it too. What the fuck happened to Marley Marl? Or should I say, who the fuck does he send to the record store to find samples for him?

5. Deep Down

This could pass for a song from the early 90's. Not a good one, but still.

6. We Gets It In (Feat. Talib Kweli)

Talib Kweli spits the same verse he's been spitting his whole career (you know, about the "institution" and shit). For what its worth this is maybe the best song eyt.

7. Just What I Need

This is the first beat that wasn't hard to listen to. Craig G raps about the state of hip hop again. Believe it or not, "Dey Know" > shitty tracks by old rappers about how hip hop sucks.

8. All Seasons

The beat is mostly pretty bad on this its just like the same note of an organ keyboard every four beats but I like the piano that kicks in there. This song is also about money and seasons or something but most importantly not about bad rap music which is a plus.

9. War Going On (Feat. Cormega)

For this one, I'm actually gonna predict the Prodigy voice sample. I can't prove I did that, but needless to say, I was right. Cool I know.

10. Skates

This beat is kinda chill but holy shit Craig G is bad.

11. Stay In Ya Lane (Feat. Sadat X)

Ah back to the whining about hip hop. This time, let's bring in Sadat X, because that guy sure can still rap.

12. Open Ya Eyes

This beat is alright I guess. The raggae inspired hook and Craig G yogurt references, not so much.

13. Regrets

This is just that same, over used, obnoxious horn sample over and over again. Craig G doesn't really even rap over it at all.

14. Not A Word

Pharoahe Monch would kill this shit.

15. Rock Dis (Feat. KRS-One)

KRS and Craig G trade rhymes. This would be pretty good for an interlude type thing. I'm just trying to find a silver lining at this point.

16. Don't Make Me Laugh

A failed attempt at an intimitating, gully sounding track.

17. The Day The Music Died/How About The Mic (Feat. Cold Heat)

This one I actually enjoyed and not just in a hypothetical scenerio way. The first song is about what it would be like if artists from other genres acted like hip hop artists, kind of like that one Ghostface song where cartoon characters are fucked up druggies and whatnot. The second is on that same, thug rappers can't rhyme premise, but the beat is good and Cold Ice is kinda nice. A good way to end an album, albeit such a bad one.

Overall:

Well that was just awful. The worst album I've reviewed on here by a long shot. In 17 songs it has one that I'd listen to again and about 13 that I'd kill myself if I heard it again. Neither of these guys, especially Marley, have anything to prove at this point and should just hang it up.

Best Songs: "The Day The Music Died/ How About The Mic"

its sad to say they are not relevant. they r VERY relevant to people who dont get their information from wack onlie reviews by people who have accomplished nothiing, mtv losers, and major radio jerk-offs.
they do more shows around the world than most people u can name. why diss legends? KRS sells out shows 200 days a year, what planet do you live on? so i guess, DITC, GZA, RAKIM, KANE, G RAP, MASTA ACE, isnt relevant but lil wayne and TI are? relevant to who?
c'mon, man, this album is good.

Oh wait, I see what happened now. The clown who wrote this review probably used to rap and got laughed at so then he moved on to writing blogs and crying about guys who helped MOLD the way for many, many acts you see out today.

How are they still not relivint ?There would NOT BE possy songs like DJ Khalad and the wack ass runners, there would be NO Cash Money with Bird Brain and Yung Wayne LiL Jeezy, whatever his name is, NO G Unit, NO D 12, NO Saint Lunatics with Nelly, No Lil Jon and the East Side Boys, NO Dipset, NO NWA, NONE OF THAT without guys like CRAIG G & Marley Marl from the Juice Crew. This guy is buggin.

To each his own , some of these songs are actually dam good and very creative. Plus what CRAIG cant get NO PROPS for being the BEST Freestyle Rapper ON THE PLANET who has proved it, and ALSOOOOOO . . he can write concept songs. What about that dooschbag. The guy has been on Classic songs that people actually know.

Its very obvious from the first corny lines you wrote that you HATE Marley Marl and KRS. You probably didn't even listen to the songs and just called up SuperNatural and asked him what he thought, ya dam sissy.

Now if Horrible MC Serch was here, this is when he would ask for your kicks and say . . STEP OFF ! ! ! ! !

Actually I've never rapped and my goal wasnt to diss Marley Marl or Craig G or KRS. And no I didnt just ask Supernat for his opinion, though I wish I would have in retrospect. My point is that, say this was a great album and not a shitty one, would an album by two washed up OGs on Good Hands "take back hip hop"? Would it cause Hot 97 to stop playing Maino or sell more than Tha Carter III? Obviously not, they are not even a blip on the radar screen at this point. Yes they shaped the genre but neither Marley, KRS, or Craig has made anything half decent in over a decade and even though you still like them they are just not relevent in today's hip hop scene.

AND "THEY" AREN'T RAPPING.ONE DUDE IS "JAK DANIELS"...THE PRODUCTION TEAM IS CALLED "COLD HEAT".THE PRODUCER "JOHNNY WALKER" FROM COLD HEAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SONG.
"OLD SCHOOL RAPPERS WHINING ABOUT HOW WACK RAP IS NOW"???????

I bought this record and I DIG IT!

My advice to anyone who listens to REAL HIP HOP is go and GET THIS!

I can not even listen to anything on the radio these days. The new style / sound of hip hop is just GARBAGE! I guess you have to make a song about some silly little dance and set your hi hats to 32nd notes to get a good review. Hey .....down a bottle of Nyquil while your at it! How did Hip Hop get to where it is today when we had such a solid foundation with the likes of Craig G, Marley, Premo, Kool G Rap, Diamond D, BRAND NUBIANS!..etc?? Its all based on IMAGE these days. Very Sad.

The reviewer bases his opinions not on fact but sentiment and hence his bias. Craig G is still dope as hell. I've listened to the album and not many a new school Mc could hold a candle to him if its anything to go by. ...I can still hear one of the songs echoing.."I made a change from a common thiefffffffff...."

Two days ago I attended his show where he defined for his Kenyan fans what it means to be legendary through the way he rocked the mic. I mean the energy, the fast paced delivery, the mad flow, simply the embodiment of real emeecing.... He and Will Pack (Silent Majority), performed songs from the album and I can now account for you, that Craig G still got it all. They kicked free's too where at one point Craig G breathed wonder by rhyming to anything someone could produce in the crowd. "..A ciggarette...they may not understand me, coz my style is different..." he'd retort in a split second! And on and on he freestlyed....for hours on end. You should've seen him rhyme to African words he's never had of.

In retrospect I think this reviewer is unaware of what's what. He can go eat a dick a die!

REview about hte review...
USELESS!

It's safe to say that you don't know anything about hiphop.

Although this album may not be up to par with what you have heard from these guys before, it is still very relevant to people who appreciate the commitment it takes to create these albums.

I myself didn't love the album but there are for sure at least 5 songs I can listen to with no delay.

"Just What I need" is a 90's sounding track as you say but, who the fuck wants to delve into whats out there now?

If I'm going to be forced to listen to bullshit by TI, Wayne, Soulja Boy and Jim Jones... Well SEND MY ASS BACK TO THE 90's with my MPC60!

Anonymous said...

What the fuck is this bullshit...obviously the asshole who reviewed this outstanding hip-hop album (aka Jordan) listens to that crunk music by that gay motherfucker named Soulja Boy, that he can't relate to any rap music from the 90s. Crank Dat Soulja Boy!

Craig G is still one of the great masters in the rap music game, and he made this album because he is sick and tired of seeing the hip-hop culture getting destroyed by Soulja Boy, 50 Cent, Kanye Worst, Lil' Jon, D4L, Dem Franchise Boyz, Ying Yang Sisters (or whatever the God damn fuck they're called), and all these fucking assclowns that Jordan listens to on a daily basis. Craig G has the lyrical weaponry to knock all those fucking bitches out, but Jordan ain't gonna want to hear it because he want to Supaman dat ho and get crunk! Yahhh!!!!!

BTW, Jordan, sucks that your family named you after an overrated legendary basketball player. Maybe they realized that if they named you something like Dave or Andy, you'd have a sad lonely existence. Holy crap, my name is Jordan, so now I get all tha supa fly honeys with the chocolate booty meat, I got money and cars, and I got tha bling bling bay-beh! Watch Me Crank It, Watch Me Roll, Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy, Then Supaman Dat Hoe! Jordan is a fucking bitch-ass sellout. Peace.

Seeing these kind of posts reminds me of just how technology truly is ever-permeating in this day and age, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as memory gets less expensive, the possibility of transferring our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about almost every day.

Now here is a shoe-in for the list of the year's best gaming-related clothing : Adidas has brought back its ZX 500 running shoe, and, since it originally is from the '80s, the gaming inspired design and coloring is an easy choice ... Right? The kicks won't be the coolest part of the deal, either ; they come packaged with a combo bracelet/USB flashdrive containing ZX Runner, a computer game primarily based on ... The shoe itself.

GameCulture writes the game stars a character named'DJ Zed' who, according to Adidas, has 5 mins to'run, moon-walk, climb walls, avoid some dodgy-looking bullies, collect power-ups, and pull off loony rooftop-to-rooftop stunts' in order to get on-stage before his set starts. It's fittingly retro -- see for yourself in the video we've included after the breakdance.

Let's start in the past and work forward - seems to be fairly logical. Starting just before the Matt Busby era at United my first selection is Jack Rowley. He joined United before Busby came along. Though not the whole story, naturally a striker is measured to some extent by his goal tally. Rowley managed to net 211 times in 424 games for United before leaving the club in 1955. His tally of 211 makes him one of only 3 players to break the 200 mark. manchester united arsenal football In anticipation of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which Manchester hosted, several first class sporting facilities were constructed and this further boosted sports development in the city. These venues include the Manchester Velodrome, the City of Manchester Stadium, the National Squash Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. berbatov Back in the Newton Heath era, the kits were made up of yellow and green stitched sections (1878 - 1892), and looked a bit like a jockey's silks. Some additional colour schemes were also employed such as a red and white shirt (1892-1894) paired with blue shorts. This all changed in 1902 when the club changed its name to Manchester United, the club radically altered the kit colours to red shirts, white shorts and black socks. This colour palette has been the foundation of the home strip ever since. The away strip is white jerseys, black shorts and white socks however different looks to this strip have existed. The most notorious of these was the all-grey strip employed in the 1995-1996 campaign. The club did not win a single game when sporting the grey shirts. The team were vociferous in their claims that the drab colour meant they had difficulty seeing their team-mates, hence passes were being sprayed all over the pitch! Another variation was the all-black kit used in 1994 and 2003. There is also a "Third Strip". This shirt which is not often used, is an homage to the kit worn when the club won the 1968 European Cup. The team has occasionally used the strips employed for training sessions in actual matches although this has been a rare occurence.
